Respond to two of your peers, providing an additional example from your experience that encompasses the value that they identified. Provide two additional recommendations that they have not considered.

Values are an influence to the practice of human services which guides the helper and client choice making (Woodside, 2015). The helper and client values can be different due to culture background, ethnicity, gender or religion just to name a few (Woodside, 2015). Each of those differences is essential with the shaping of unique characteristics that individualize each of us (Woodside, 2015). These personal values do not diminish as a human service professional but are they conflicting to the delivery of support. They are not conflicting to the delivery of support nor are they difficult to embrace with adults because each client is given respect of individuality, self-determination, acceptance, confidentiality and tolerance. If children are the client difficulty could affect practice of self determination if they have a history of self injuries behaviors. Example, if the charts states that the child will engage in self injuries behavior because they struggle with incontinent and will isolate themselves to inflict punishment. This is not a resolution to a medical problem; therefore the client will be encouraged to wear a brief/pull-up to avoid public viewing of wetness. This approach restricts self determination because it will redirect course of action that the individual selected as a resolution. It will also build tolerance and assure confidentiality because it allows the client to see you are not judging past or present behavior and others will not be knowledgeable of the issue (Woodside, 2015). Both are imperative values that are of great importance that should be displayed with every client because they are essential to the development of healthy relationship between the helper and client (Woodside, 2015). Relationships build by embracing values because barriers are removed and clients are able to relax allowing helper to identify unspoken needs which guide practice (Woodside, 2015). Neva S

The question of which human service value that was most difficult for the learner to practice was sort of complex due to the fact that the learner currently volunteer’s time through serving through a ministry within her local church. Example: As a Deaconess in the church, the learner has many obligations to leaders, colleagues, and new souls coming into the body of Christ. The human service value that this learner has had difficulty with in the past is tolerance of people who continue to hurt, harm, or do wrong to me or others. I am what you call a people person and I enjoy doing what I can to help people; not hurt them, therefore, when I can see others being abused or used or feel I have been mistreated in some way, it bothers me and I find it hard to have tolerance for those who practice their lives doing bad things to others. Woodside & McClam (2015) suggests that tolerance is the second value of a human service worker where these helpers have the ability to be patient and fair toward each client and will work with the client to plan for the future rather than judging, blaming, or punishing them for prior behavior (pg. 172). The learner has difficulty forgiving those who make a career out of hurting others and tolerance for this type of behavior whether it’s a client, colleague or superior would be difficult for the learner to have if it was dealing with a career choice of serving in the human service field….
